Parry Sound Air Show

If you are interested in vintage aircraft, taking a helicopter ride or hanging out with airplane people, check out the Parry Sound Airport annual Fly-in and Drive-in this Saturday September 10, 2011. There is also a bunch of other things like face painting, antique & classic cars, art work and a BBQ or you may want to put on your dancing shoes and sway to the rhythms of the Northern Lights Steel Orchestra. This is a photo I took at last years event of a DC-3  aka Gooney Bird.

Right Off the Dock in Parry Sound, Ontario

Parry Sound Ontario is the home of Bobby Orr, one of the greatest hockey players ever.
It was a very ominous day looking off the town wharf and out into the mammoth sized waters of Georgian Bay.

Under the Parry Sound Train Trestle

The train trestle crosses over the Seguin River in the heart of Parry Sound, Ontario. Located right on the shores of Georgian Bay this bridge can be seen for many miles. Built by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in 1908 this trestle spans 1695 feet long and is 105 feet in height. It is one of the oldest and longest trestles in Canada.

There is a beautiful waterfalls under the bridge where I noticed a fly fisherman doing his thing. I will post on a later date.

Fishing off the Parry Sound Wharf

It was an ominous day in Parry Sound (birthplace of Bobby Orr) where I spotted these kids fishing off the local wharf.  I blasted off a few shots as they ignored me while they concentrated on baiting their hooks. Then without saying anything to them they turned and smiled.

Tuggies

I made a trip to Parry Sound last weekend to have lunch with a friend and we stumbled upon the Georgian Bay Tugfest. There were many a Tugboat on the main pier ranging from 6 feet to 130 feet in size.  We were just in time for one of the main features – the tugboat race. This is a shot from the breakwater near the marina on Georgian Bay.

Da Plane, Boss, Da Plane!

I snapped this shot as I was traveling up near Rosseau, Ontario and towards Parry Sound, just off old Hwy #69. For us Canadians it is our Thanksgiving weekend and Columbus Day for our American friends. Safe travels to all.

The Plane Leaves at 8 Be Under It

The first DC-3 aircraft were built by Douglas in 1935 under the military destination of C-47. Dakota’s or Gooney Bird’s as they are affectionately referred to are one of the most significant transport aircraft ever built.  This machine is part of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and was on display at the recent Parry Sound Air show on September 11, 2010.

The Russians are Coming … The Russians are Coming

Paignton House Road leads to the Red Leaves Resort near the village of Minett in Muskoka Canada. As part of the G8 Summit expenditures this small piece of road cost the taxpayers a mere $410,000.00 to pave and beautify. The resort is located about 75 km’s from where the G8 is in the town of Huntsville, Ontario. According to the Honourable Tony Clement the Member of Parliament for Muskoka-Parry Sound,“ The Paignton House Road will be an important route taken by VIPs attending the 2010 G8 Summit, as they travel between The Rosseau resort and the summit site each day,” More from Tony baby here

Rumor has it the Russians are staying here this weekend. I wonder how the Vodka inventory is?

Exploring Georgian Bays 30,000 Islands

The 30,000 island region of Georgian Bay is absolutely breathtaking.  I would highly recommend The Island Queen cruise which you can pickup from the docks in the town of Parry Sound, Ontario. The region is filled with glacier sculpted granite islands and windswept trees that look like Group of Seven paintings. The United Nations (UNESCO)  has designated this area  of Georgian Bay as a Biosphere Reserve being the worlds largest freshwater archipelago covering 347,000 hectares.

Things are looking up in Parry Sound, Ontario the hometown of one of the greatest hockey players ever Bobby Orr no less. This is a shot looking straight up from under the Canadian Pacific Railway train trestle. Its quite an engineering feat from the early 1900’s.

Trucking through the forest

Why do people leave vehicles in the woods? While driving north bound on highway #69 towards Parry Sound we spotted this old pickup truck (well not that old) through the trees in early spring. I think its a Dodge? It had a 1982 license plate sticker on it however I don’t think its that old with the square head lights and such.
