Florence Island on Lake Rosseau
Florence Island is located on Lake Rosseau closer to the Windermere side of the lake. My limited research tells me the island was likely named after William Jermyn Conlin (July 26, 1831-November 19, 1891) an actor who took the stage name Billy Florence after visiting Florence Italy. I was unable to find any information connecting him to the Muskoka area. He was also the co-founder of the Shriners.

Hi Ed. If you take a moment and read the newspaper article reprint in the first pages of John Denisons book on Frank Micklethwaite, you will come across Micklethwaites reference regarding Florence Island and Billy Florence. The newspaper article dates from 1886 era. I have found other back up corroboration in early historical books relating to Muskoka in the 1880’s Keep up the good work. Randy
Thank you Randy. I do have the book and will check this out. Frank Micklethwaite was a fascinating character. Without Denison investigating his work we may not have had much. Here is a review of John Denisons book for others to understand the importance.
Thanks again.
