The Pileted Woodpecker
I have tried a number of times unsuccessfully to photograph this Pileated Woodpecker? (Dryocopus pileatus) that I see around my cottage from time to time. They are very timid and do not stay in one place for more than a few seconds. I just happened to be standing outside with my camera in hand and this guy flew right beside me. They are a pretty large bird and the same one as Woody.
I just visited a friend’s cousin in the Muskoka area and to my surprise, there was a pileated woodpecker eating from a dead tree. I screamed with excitement and that bird did not flinch. I had been dying to see one for years. This was an amazing experience and the owners thought nothing of it as it is a regular to the tree. It stayed for at least 1/2 hour then we went inside and left it pecking at the tree.
