The Movie – An American in Muskoka

I’m happy to announce that I have received special permission from the filmmaker to share this outstanding documentary about Muskoka. The 76 min movie was shot in Muskoka in the mid 2000’s or about 15 years ago. It takes a very serious look at the changes that are occurring in Muskoka. The film features interviews with notable people such as actor Harry Hamlin, businessman Kevin O’Leary and many other well known lovers/supporters of Muskoka. After nearly two decades of driving by and photographing Cliff Island on Lake Joseph I discovered there was a movie about the American owners who have summered here for well over 100 years. Some of the changes that are occurring on the Muskoka Lakes were taken from the families perspective however some 15 years later it’s not hard to see the changes. I encourage you to watch this film and share it with others. – thank you!

Muskoka Time Lapse Video

A beautiful time lapse video of Muskoka. I recommend you go full screen and set it to the highest quality of 720p. There are a number of videos on the MiLapse page showing how they made this type of video.

Un-McMansion

A humble little abode tucked into a quiet bay on a Muskoka Island. Its perfect for a  Hollywood actor, his actress wife and family who have a long history of enjoying the summers here.  Not all Celebs in Muskoka are staying in McMansions. Many are very low key and down to earth people enjoying the lifestyle and the natural beauty of the area just like the rest of us.

On another note, the  fall colours are starting to kick in. I would estimate that we are at about 30 to 40% of peak.

The Old Shed in the Forest

I’m always curious at what you might find at the end of an old trail that leads into the forest. I continued walking deeper into the forest and all of a sudden I came to a small clearing with this weathered old shed in the middle. Yes, I did have a peek inside and no I didn’t find any skeletons or precious artifacts. Its amazing how well some of these structures have stood up to the elements after being abandoned for decades.

The Secret Lookout

This is a cool, private place on an Island in the Muskoka area that is no longer in use.  Its part of  Secret Muskoka where I am not allowed to reveal its location or a team of wild goats will drag me across the Torrence Barrens. There are not many abandoned places left on the big lakes. The waterfront real estate is so valuable and taxes so high that anyone owning property usually sells it or uses it for themselves.

Benched

I enjoy wandering around discovering places that you normally wouldn’t get to see when visiting the Muskoka area.  I have been fortunate to meet a number of great people that have deep-rooted knowledge on the history of the area.

One of my connections brought me to this old secluded and abandoned place in the forest. I promised the owners I would not disclose the location as it is deeply cherished and private. Yup, secret Muskoka.  There appeared to be a tennis court here at one time which has long since been forgotten. This old bench is all that remains woven into the memories of Muskoka.

Looking For Goldie and Kurt

Wheres Goldie? Can you take me to Goldie?  Have you seen Goldie?
Everyone wants to know where Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell hang their hats in Muskoka. I fought with myself on whether I should make this post however I reasoned that in Muskoka, Goldie has pretty much been outed a long time ago. However, out of respect I don’t dare drive into her quiet little bay as its blatantly obvious why you are there.

Muskoka is filled with all kinds of celebs, kings of industry and sports stars extraordinaire who come to enjoy its beauty and avoid the hoopla.
So from a distance please wave to Goldie however if you need to see just a teeny bit bigger please click on the image.
