Dock Spiders from Mars .. I mean Muskoka
Its a sure sign that the warmer weather has arrived when you see dock spiders relaxing on your dock. Apparently these are the largest spiders in Ontario. They are usually seen around docks and rocks near the waters edge. They are carnivorous and can actually dive under the water to snatch their prey.

Your blog has been included in our guide.
Around The World with Daily Photoblogs Old and New is a brief history of the City Daily Photoblog movement and a guide to sites around the world.
The criterion for inclusion here is that photographs mainly from a specific geographical location have been posted at dated intervals, and archives are searchable by date. Although originally arising from the CDPB lists this is an independent publication. Inclusion here does not imply that a blog is officially a CDPB.
Please keep us informed of any changes to your details.
Well now Ed I have a link to a pic of a dock spider in our horse barn up here in Powassan. The spider and its mate somehow managed to carry (yes carry) a mouse to the rafter and ‘web it ‘ vertically off the rafter for feasting. I can send you a link to pics of them if interested.
cheers, Russ
Hey Ed and Cindy,
Fantastic photos! You must change professions. The photos are stunning and should be made into postcards. You are truly weekend warriors. Thanks for sharing. Next time, you must include the “bird lady” and her “northern friends” 🙂 Looking forward to more great pics of your adventures.
ZOMG, I was putting my shoes on today and one of those guys were just chilling out… I spent about 10 minutes screaming trying to get it out of my house…. NOT FUN! SO i chose to wear sandals todays
Jesus H Christ!!That thing is freaking HUGE!!My God….I absolutley HATE spiders with a Passion so…
Over react all you want they are totally harmless to us unless your 1′ tall. They love to bask in the warm sun & often tolerate others of their species near by . Perhaps they are having a laugh at their gentlemen callers that happened by the night before & the meal they provided !
Dolomedes can live long enough for two egg sacks on average & when they dive they can stay under for up to 45mins its said as they trap air bubles on the hairs to breathe with while submerged.
The female of the species is more deadlier than the male !
That’s a baby we took some photos of it’s mama at my dock in Milford Bay
I was doing research on mine. Who cam up high in the rankings? My friend, Ed!!!!
